Rohloff E-14

The Rohloff E-14 is the electronic shift actuation for the SPEEDHUB 500/14. It has two parts: the shift unit on the handlebar and the actuator mounted on the hub. The gearbox is the same proven, tandem-approved SPEEDHUB — 14 gears, a 526% range — only the shifting is done electronically.

The Rohloff E-14 2.0 actuator

  • At a button press, in 180 ms. At the moment of the shift the e-bike system briefly takes the load off the drivetrain, and the E-14 engages the new gear. That makes it silky smooth and spares the gearbox.
  • Multi-Shift. Hold the button, and after the first shift it carries on in steps of three (1 + 3 + 3 + 3).
  • Auto-Downshift. When you stop — at traffic lights, say — it shifts back automatically to a starting gear you choose.
  • Gear display. The e-bike display shows your current gear, permanently or briefly after each shift.

It is approved for the most powerful mid-motors too, which makes it ideal for S-Pedelecs (45 km/h).

Automatic functions — Bosch Smart System

Section titled “Automatic functions — Bosch Smart System”

From model year 2026, the E-14 2.0 with the Bosch Smart System offers three modes, which you switch between with a short, simultaneous press on the buttons:

  • A — automatic: the system takes over shifting entirely, keeping to the cadence set in the Bosch eBike Flow app. You can step in by hand at any time.
  • M+ — automatic when coasting: it shifts automatically while you coast, you shift while you pedal — for sporty, off-road riding.
  • M — manual: full control at a button press, with Multi-Shift.

The Rohloff E-14 2.0 app runs on Android and iOS. With it you set the starting gear, invert the button layout, turn Multi-Shift off, and reach the service functions: calibration, firmware updates, reading the error memory.

E-14 Solo: electronic shifting without an e-bike

Section titled “E-14 Solo: electronic shifting without an e-bike”

The E-14 Solo runs on its own battery with no e-bike system, and fits every SPEEDHUB ever made. Available from Q1 2027 — we collect everything about it in its own section: E-14 Solo.

Can I convert my Bosch or Panasonic e-bike to the E-14? No. The E-14 would also need the Bosch or Panasonic system’s parameters changed, which a workshop cannot do, so there is no retrofit kit. For these systems, the E-14 comes on new, complete e-bikes. We do convert bikes to a conventional SPEEDHUB, though: Converting to a Rohloff hub.

Does the E-14 fit an older SPEEDHUB? Yes, the E-14 fits every SPEEDHUB ever made. The Bosch and Panasonic versions only work on new e-bikes, though, as power and the gear display come from the e-bike system — for an older hub, the E-14 Solo will be the answer.

Where is the E-14’s serial number? On the underside of the shift unit. With the Bosch Smart System you can also show it on the display: Settings → My eBike → eShift. It always starts with 880304. You need it for the warranty — but do not use it to register the SPEEDHUB; that takes the hub’s own serial number: Warranty, invoice and serial number.

Can it be combined with ABS? With the Bosch Smart System (BES3) ABS, yes: it takes the right Bosch cable, a Rohloff brake disc with a sensor ring and a Rohloff WSS spacer. The older Bosch/Magura ABS (BES2) is not compatible with the SPEEDHUB.
