Removing and fitting the shift unit

The shift unit has to come off for a brake disc change, a shaft seal change or calibration, for example. This guide assumes the e-bike system and every E-14 part work perfectly. If unsure, leave it to us: book an appointment.

  1. Shift to gear 14 with the E-14, then remove the wheel: Removing and fitting the wheel. Lay the wheel shift-unit-side up.

  2. Mark — or photograph — the axle plate position.

  3. Unscrew the five axle plate screws (TX20) and take off the axle plate.

  4. Pull gear 1 off the shift shaft, with tweezers for example.

  5. Lift the whole shift unit off the gearbox axle.

  6. Remove the paper gaskets from the shift unit and axle — do not reuse them.

Hub and shift unit must both be in gear 14. If you did not shift to 14 before removal, shift the hub with an 8 mm spanner: turn the shift shaft anticlockwise to the stop. New shift units come in gear 14; to set a used one to 14:

  1. Connect the shift unit to the e-bike system — do not fit it to the hub yet.
  2. Put the battery in, switch the system on and shift to gear 14 with the + button (watch the display).
  3. Switch the system off, take the battery out and separate the shift unit’s plug.

Then:

  1. Fit new paper gaskets to the axle ring with the holes lined up.

  2. Check that both freewheel springs are there and seated correctly.

  3. Put the shift unit on the gearbox. The grub screw must protrude 2 mm, with the axle ring’s marked hole over it — details in Converting the shift actuation. The two dowel pins reach into the spring holes and press on the springs.

  4. Put gear 1 on the shift shaft’s hex with its narrow collar towards the gearbox. It slides on easily, without resistance, in only one position — that is the right one.

  5. Fit the axle plate in its marked position and screw in the five screws (TX20, 3 Nm).

Frequently asked questions

Which gear must the hub be in when refitting the E-14 shift unit?
Gear 14 — and the shift unit too. If you did not shift to 14 before removal, shift the hub with an 8 mm spanner (turn the shift shaft anticlockwise to the stop) and the shift unit, connected, with the + button. New shift units come in gear 14.
