E-14: frequently asked questions

On the E-14’s versions, conversion, serial number and ABS: Rohloff E-14.

The E-14 2.0’s automatic functions work on S-Pedelecs with the Bosch Gen5 (BDU38) motor, not with the Gen4 (BDU37) motor. You can see which motor you have in the Bosch eBike Flow app, in the display menu or on the motor housing itself.

Software requirements (these or later):

Part Version Update via
Rohloff E-14 2.0 2.5.1.0 Rohloff E-14 2.0 app
Bosch control unit (BRC) 17.18.1 Bosch eBike Flow app
Bosch drive unit 17.16.0 Bosch eBike Flow app

With the current Bosch software, when you stop the automatic can override the starting gear you set and shift back to gear 3 or 4 — even if you set gear 7, say. It happens in A and M+ mode, not in M mode. Bosch has announced the fix (a “Quick Fix”) for October 2026, as an update installed via the Bosch eBike Flow app — the app shows whether it has reached you; until then, use M mode if you need your starting gear without the automatic. On the modes: operating on the Bosch Smart System.

Starting gear resetting: Bosch BES2 and Nyon 2

Section titled “Starting gear resetting: Bosch BES2 and Nyon 2”

On a Bosch BES2 system with a Nyon 2 display, the starting gear can in some cases reset to gear 1 — Bosch knows about the fault. You can avoid it by not charging for longer than 12 hours, or by taking the Nyon 2 off before charging. Until then it is worth switching the starting gear off, so you do not get an unexpected free pedal turn when setting off.

Used correctly, there is no need to shift under heavy pedal load. You can, but it is not recommended: the gearbox’s clutch elements take a jolt, and as they spring back the cranks may spin freely for a moment — you can lose your balance. It is at your own risk.

If the 7–8 or 8–7 shift happens very slowly or under heavy load, gear 11 or 14 can briefly engage as an intermediate gear — you may feel it as resistance.

Frequently asked questions

Do the automatic functions work on an S-Pedelec?
Yes, on S-Pedelecs with a Bosch Gen5 (BDU38) motor. Not with the Gen4 (BDU37) motor. They need E-14 2.0 firmware 2.5.1.0 or later, and on the Bosch side at least BRC 17.18.1 and drive unit software 17.16.0.
Why does the automatic mode shift back to a different gear when I stop?
With the current Bosch software, in A and M+ mode the automatic sometimes overrides Auto-Downshift and shifts back to gear 3 or 4. M mode is not affected. Bosch has announced a fix in an update via the Bosch eBike Flow app; until then, use M mode if you want your set starting gear.
