Error codes on Bosch BES2 and Panasonic FIT1
When there is a fault, the e-bike system shows an error code on the display. Write it down — fast troubleshooting depends on it. For the Bosch Smart System, see Error codes.
If you bring it to us
Section titled “If you bring it to us”For accurate troubleshooting, bring:
- the Bosch diagnostic report (made by a Bosch dealer with the Bosch Diagnostic Tool) — it lists the faults and the installed parts;
- the motor type, number of batteries and display type;
- the bike’s make and model;
- the E-14’s and the SPEEDHUB’s serial numbers;
- the error code from the display and a description of the fault.
Checking connections and swapping parts
Section titled “Checking connections and swapping parts”Several faults call for this. Always work with the system off, and test shifting after each step.
- Connections: check in turn the shift unit to connecting cable, connecting cable to converter, and finally converter to Y-cable.
- On a bike with two batteries, test with one battery at a time. If the system will not start with one of them, that battery is faulty.
- Swap parts — if you have good spares to hand — in this order: shift unit, connecting cable, DC/DC-CAN converter, Y-cable. The Bosch Y-cable is only available through Bosch service.
- Check the E-14 has the latest firmware: Maintenance on Bosch BES2 and Panasonic FIT1.
If the fault has gone, clear the error code. If not, bring it to us.
Bosch BES2
Section titled “Bosch BES2”No error code, but shifting is wrong
Section titled “No error code, but shifting is wrong”Symptom: sometimes it does not shift, or only one way; automatic calibration cannot be confirmed with the M button; after a while it shifts back, and straight back again after an upshift.
Cause: an over-tightly coiled cable spiral has damaged the cable (parallel scratches across it), or the handlebar button or its cable is faulty.
What to do: check the handlebar button and its cable to the converter. The converter’s LED shows whether the buttons work: after a correct press, the blinking starts again.
Symptom: the shift unit makes a pulsing sound but does not shift. What to do: remove the shift unit and check the gear for damage and correct fit: Removing the E-14 shift unit.
Symptom: with a Nyon 2nd-generation (BUI350) display, the starting gear sets itself to 1. What to do: switch the starting gear off until the fix arrives.
503 — speed sensor fault
Section titled “503 — speed sensor fault”The display shows a speed of 0, assistance is limited, and it may shift to the starting gear while riding. Check the Bosch speed sensor and the magnet’s position.
591 — authentication error
Section titled “591 — authentication error”Only visible in the Bosch Diagnostic Tool, in the fault memory; it does not limit function. Update the Bosch and E-14 firmware. You can keep riding.
592 — unsupported display
Section titled “592 — unsupported display”The display does not support eShift; shifting is not possible. An Intuvia, Kiox or Nyon display is needed.
593 — software without eShift
Section titled “593 — software without eShift”The bike is not prepared for eShift: no assistance and no gear display. Contact the bike maker.
595 — the E-14 did not respond within 10 seconds of start-up
Section titled “595 — the E-14 did not respond within 10 seconds of start-up”- Beeps three times at switch-on and shifts: the start-up routine did not complete cleanly. Clear the code, update the E-14 firmware, switch the system off and on. You can keep riding.
- Does not beep and does not shift: check the connections and swap parts (see above).
596 — the E-14 dropped out for more than 1 second while riding
Section titled “596 — the E-14 dropped out for more than 1 second while riding”The shift unit beeps three times at switch-on, everything works, and the code is only in the fault memory. Usually a connector was separated with the system on. Clear the code, update the firmware, restart and check the connections.
606 — external short circuit
Section titled “606 — external short circuit”No power, the system shuts down. Check the Hirose connector and the cable for damage or tampering; check or swap the converter and shift unit.
740 — the E-14 is blocked
Section titled “740 — the E-14 is blocked”Only shown on the display. The E-14 failed to complete a shift five times in a row; the next successful shift resets the counter. Switch the system off and on, and do not shift under heavy pedal load. If it comes back, the shift unit’s gear and the gear on the gearbox’s shift shaft need checking for damage and correct orientation: Removing the E-14 shift unit. If it still will not shift, bring it to us.
741 — position sensor fault
Section titled “741 — position sensor fault”Only shown on the display. Acknowledge the error and switch the system off and on. If it shifts, keep riding; if not, bring it to us.
743 — supply voltage too low
Section titled “743 — supply voltage too low”Only shown on the display; shifting is not possible. Check the connections and swap parts; if that does not help, bring it to us.
744 — no communication between shift unit and converter
Section titled “744 — no communication between shift unit and converter”Only shown on the display. The shift unit beeps three times but does not shift; the cause is a delayed CAN signal from the converter at start-up. Restart the e-bike; if the fault returns immediately, the converter needs replacing — bring it to us.
745 — automatic calibration failed
Section titled “745 — automatic calibration failed”Only shown on the display. Possible causes: calibration did not finish or was not saved, an error occurred during it, the pedals were loaded — or the grub screw is screwed too deep into the axle.
- Before starting, shift to the lowest available gear and repeat the calibration: Maintenance on Bosch BES2 and Panasonic FIT1.
- Check the grub screw’s depth: Removing the E-14 shift unit.
- If it still fails: Manual calibration — this is a job for a workshop.
Panasonic FIT1
Section titled “Panasonic FIT1”80-76 — the E-14 did not respond at start-up
Section titled “80-76 — the E-14 did not respond at start-up”- Beeps three times at switch-on and shifts: switch the system off and on, and update the E-14 firmware. You can keep riding.
- Does not beep and does not shift: check the connections and swap parts (see above) — here with the Panasonic Y-cable, which is only available through FLYER’s service.
80-77 — connection lost while riding
Section titled “80-77 — connection lost while riding”The shift unit beeps three times, everything works, and the code is only in the fault memory. Usually a connector was separated with the system on. Update the firmware, restart and check the connections.
81-740 — the E-14 is blocked
Section titled “81-740 — the E-14 is blocked”Same as 740: five failed shifts in a row. Restart the system and do not shift under heavy load; if it comes back, the gears need checking.
81-741 — position sensor fault
Section titled “81-741 — position sensor fault”Acknowledge it and restart the system. If it does not shift, bring it to us.
81-743 — supply voltage too low
Section titled “81-743 — supply voltage too low”Shifting is not possible. Check the connections and swap parts; if that does not help, bring it to us.
81-744 — no communication between shift unit and converter
Section titled “81-744 — no communication between shift unit and converter”The shift unit beeps three times but does not shift. The converter needs replacing — bring it to us.
81-745 — automatic calibration failed
Section titled “81-745 — automatic calibration failed”Same as 745: shift to the lowest gear, repeat the calibration, check the grub screw, and as a last resort calibrate manually.
Frequently asked questions
- What does error code 595 mean on an E-14 with Bosch BES2?
- The E-14 did not respond on the CAN bus within the first 10 seconds after start-up. If the shift unit beeps three times at switch-on and shifts, clearing the error, updating the firmware and restarting is enough. If it does not beep or shift, check the connections in turn and find the faulty part by swapping — or bring it to us.
- What does error code 740 mean on the E-14?
- The E-14 failed to complete a shift five times in a row and has stopped. Switch the system off and on, avoid shifting under heavy pedal load, and if it comes back, the gears in the shift unit and on the gearbox's shift shaft need checking. On Panasonic FIT1 the same fault is 81-740.
