Diagnostic set and cross-swapping
If the E-14 will not shift, the faulty part can be found right on the e-bike: by connecting the Rohloff diagnostic set’s known-good parts in place of the bike’s own, one at a time. It is a workshop tool — we have one: book an appointment.

Preliminary checks
Section titled “Preliminary checks”- Do all parts of the e-bike system work?
- Is current software for this e-bike system installed on the shift unit?
- Does the shift unit beep softly when you switch the system on?
- Are the visible cables intact, the plugs properly seated and the pins in order?
- Does the display show the current gear?
- Does every part (battery or batteries, motor, display, E-14) appear in the Bosch diagnostic report?
Cross-swapping
Section titled “Cross-swapping”After each step you watch for the same thing: does the diagnostic shift unit beep at switch-on, and does it shift? If it beeps and shifts, you have found the faulty part: swap the other diagnostic parts back for the originals and test again. If it does not beep, or beeps but does not shift, go on to the next step. Leave the diagnostic parts already connected in place.
- Shift unit: separate the purple 6-pin plug right in front of the shift unit and connect the diagnostic shift unit. If it works, the bike’s shift unit is faulty.
- Handlebar button: separate the handlebar button’s blue 4-pin plug and connect the diagnostic Trigger (handlebar button). If it works, the handlebar button is faulty.
- Connection cable: remove the motor, separate the purple plugs at the DC-CAN adapter and in front of the diagnostic shift unit, and connect the diagnostic cable between them. If it works, the connection cable is faulty.
- DC-CAN adapter (or converter): disconnect the diagnostic cable, the Bosch Y-cable and the diagnostic Trigger from the adapter, and connect all three to the diagnostic adapter. If it works, the adapter is faulty. If not, the e-bike system’s own parts need checking.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you find out which E-14 part is faulty?
- By cross-swapping: the workshop connects the diagnostic set's known-good parts in place of the bike's own, one at a time — shift unit, handlebar button, connection cable, DC-CAN adapter in that order — and after each step checks whether the system beeps and shifts.
