Frequently asked questions

How often does the oil in a Rohloff Speedhub need changing?

The factory specification is once a year or every 5,000 km, whichever comes first. It keeps the hub lubricated and, more importantly, the flushing oil removes condensation and wear particles that got into the system, protecting the internals from corrosion. More in the knowledge base

Is it normal for the hub shell to “sweat” or look oily?

A Rohloff hub is a sealed oil-bath system: thermal expansion can normally bring a little oil mist to the breather. If you see oil drops, or the hub leaves a “puddle”, the source has to be found first — often it is only a screw's torque, the oil drain screw's seal or a paper gasket, sometimes it really is a shaft seal. Bring it in and we will check it at short notice. More in the knowledge base

Can I use a different type of oil when servicing?

Absolutely not. The Rohloff Speedhub needs its own cleaning and lubricating oil. Other oils can damage the plastic parts inside or fail to give the shifting mechanism the grip it needs. To keep your warranty, use only the factory oil-change kit — you will also find it in our boodabike.com webshop. More in the knowledge base

I would like a Rohloff hub in my bike, which has a different hub gear now. Can you help?

Yes — it is one of the most common conversion requests. The first step is to see what your bike allows. Send photos of the bike, the rear dropouts and the hub area through the contact form with what you have in mind, and we will help. More in the knowledge base

How should I clean the hub?

Never use a pressure washer! High-pressure water can get past the seals, mix with the oil and damage the bearings. Use mildly soapy water and a soft cloth. More in the knowledge base

What should I do if the hub shifts stiffly in deep winter cold?

In extreme cold (below −15 °C) the oil can thicken. The factory specification then allows a little cleaning oil to be mixed into the running oil so the lubrication stays thinner. If you ride in those conditions, ask us about preparing the hub for winter. More in the knowledge base

If I need a Rohloff part, can you get it for me?

Yes. We run the www.boodabike.com webshop, where you will find every Rohloff part you need, and we are an official Rohloff distribution partner in Europe. If you have a question about a part, write to us through the contact form and we will help. More in the knowledge base

Do I need to book ahead, or can I bring the bike in any time?

To keep the work to our standard and the waiting short, please book an appointment by phone or online. That way the specialist is free when you arrive. More in the knowledge base

I live outside Budapest. Do I have to bring the bike in for service?

Not necessarily. We also accept units sent by courier. The details need arranging in advance, but often it is enough to send only the removed rear wheel or the hub itself, well packed. After the service we send it back ready to ride, so you can use our expertise from anywhere in the country. More in the knowledge base

Do I get an official record of the service you did?

We are Rohloff AG's official service and distribution partner in Hungary, and we invoice every maintenance job we do. That matters for your warranty, and when you sell the bike later it proves professional maintenance and a genuine service history. More in the knowledge base

How do I know exactly what a repair will cost?

There are no hidden costs with us. Before any work starts we assess the hub. If parts beyond the basic service need replacing (a worn sprocket or a damaged cable, say), we tell you first and only go ahead once you approve. Our prices are published on this site as well. More in the knowledge base

Can you do an urgent, fast-tracked service?

We know a Rohloff bike is often someone's daily transport or the key part of a tour already under way. We can take a limited number of urgent jobs with a faster turnaround — please call us first to check our free capacity. More in the knowledge base

Why is an engineering check needed before a conversion?

Fitting a Rohloff hub and a belt drive needs a chain and belt line accurate to the millimetre. We have to check the frame's dropout spacing (135, 142 or 148 mm Boost, for example), the disc brake mount and the torque support mounting points. The check is your guarantee as well that the valuable parts you order will work perfectly and safely in your bike. More in the knowledge base

Does my e-bike keep its range and power with a Rohloff E-14?

Yes. The E-14 shifts in step with the motor: for the moment of the shift the motor briefly eases off its torque, the gear engages in 180 ms, and you ride on with full assistance. That spares the drivetrain and makes the shift smoother. More in the knowledge base

How do I know which Rohloff type (quick-release, bolt-on axle or A12) I need?

It depends on the design of your frame's rear dropouts. During the check we establish whether your hub needs to suit traditional 10 mm dropouts or a modern 12 mm thru-axle (A12) system, and we order the exactly fitting version and the right adapters (OEM, OEM2, PM) for the conversion from Massive Corporation Kft.'s stock. The Massive Bikes workshop: a frame being built up in a repair stand

About us

Who are we?

Our story began in 2013, when we opened the first Massive Bikes shop in Budapest. We started by building Gates belt drives and hub gears into production bikes, then widened the range year by year — which is where today's full product line grew from.

We have built a great many bespoke bicycles since, and met nearly every technical solution there is. That practice, measured in hundreds of bicycles, is what goes into every service job today.

After completing Rohloff's official service training we were authorised to service Rohloff hubs, and have since also become an official European distributor of Rohloff hubs and parts. Alongside our own bicycle brand we now sell Rohloff hub-gear and Gates belt-drive systems.

Our team solves service problems quickly and professionally. We hold a large stock, so most work can be done straight away — and your bike spends as little time in the workshop as possible.
