Brake disc: fitting and replacing

The SPEEDHUB’s disc mount has a 52 mm centring diameter, with the four fixing bolts on a 65 mm bolt circle. The disc to suit your brake is ordered separately. It goes on over the shift housing, so changing it usually means taking the axle plate off.

  1. Remove the wheel (Removing the rear wheel) and mark the axle plate position.

  2. Unscrew the five axle plate screws (M4×25, TX20), tilt the axle plate and take it off sideways, then hold the shift housing in place with one axle plate screw (L).

  3. Loosen the four fixing bolts (M: M8×0.75×8.5, 5 mm Allen), take the disc off the centring collar and pull it off over the shift housing.

    The four fixing bolts

  1. Pass the new disc over the shift housing and onto the gearbox cover’s centring collar. Mind the direction of rotation!

  2. Tighten the four fixing bolts to 10 Nm — dry, without grease or threadlocker. The M8×0.75 fine thread is self-locking, needs no extra securing, and we strongly advise against threadlocker.

  3. Remove the L screw, refit the axle plate in its marked position and tighten the five screws (TX20, 3 Nm).

Rohloff brake discs

Rohloff brake discs are marked “min. thickness”. Below it, the disc must be replaced.

Disc New thickness Wear limit
220 / 203 / 180 mm 2.3 mm 2.0 mm
203 / 180 / 160 mm 2.0 mm 1.8 mm
203 / 180 / 160 mm 1.8 mm 1.5 mm

Rohloff discs work with both organic and sintered pads. Sintered pads can wear the disc faster, and the particles from their wear can cause rust on other parts.

In principle every SPEEDHUB can be converted to a disc brake cover with external actuation — but only by the Rohloff factory service. The hub has to be sent in and registered in the owner’s name. We handle it for you: Estimates and costs.

Frequently asked questions

When does a Rohloff brake disc need replacing?
When it is thinner than the "min. thickness" printed on it: the wear limit is 2.0 mm for 2.3 mm discs, 1.8 mm for 2.0 mm discs and 1.5 mm for 1.8 mm discs. Below that, the disc must be replaced.
