Which frame does it fit?

A SPEEDHUB fits almost any frame — the only question is which version. Three things decide: the frame’s dropout width, the shape of the dropouts and the brake mount.

  • Dropout width: 135 mm (CC, TS), 142 and 148 mm (A12), 170 and 177 mm (XL), 190 and 197 mm (XXL). So a 130 mm road frame will not do, while a 135 mm one will.
  • Flat contact on the left: on the inside of the left dropout there must be a flat area 40 mm in diameter around the axle for the axle plate — with no weld seam or other part sticking in.
  • A brake mount on the frame: the SPEEDHUB has no brake, so the frame needs a disc or rim brake mount.

Which axle comes with which dropout width is shown in the table in Variants.

Dropout Version Chain tension
Horizontal, slot shorter than 25 mm TS (threaded axle) with the long torque arm chain tensioner needed
Horizontal, slot longer than 25 mm TS with the long torque arm in the dropout (TS EX with cables along the seat stay: at most 20 mm)
Vertical CC (quick release) — in and out without tools; TS also possible chain tensioner, or an eccentric bottom bracket
Vertical, with an IS disc mount OEM2 axle plate — or the long torque arm chain tensioner, or an eccentric bottom bracket
Four-bar (Horst Link) OEM, OEM2 or PM axle plate only chain tensioner
Sliding Rohloff OEM dropout (hardtail) OEM axle plate by sliding the dropout — no tensioner needed
Rohloff OEM dropout, full suspension OEM axle plate chain tensioner
Direct Post Mount brake mount PM axle plate with a PM Bone chain tensioner, or an eccentric bottom bracket

With OEM2, the torque is taken up by the frame’s IS disc brake tabs. That comes with strict conditions:

  • the tabs are one piece with the dropout, follow the IS standard, and dropout and tabs are at least 6 mm thick;
  • with a support bolt, the rear tab must sit behind the vertical through the axle centre — if it is in front, this solution is not allowed;
  • an OEM2 axle plate may not be used with a disc mount on the chainstay;
  • OEM2 mounting needs the frame maker’s approval; without it, it is at your own risk.

The details — support bolt, SPEEDBONE, MonkeyBone, PM Bone — are in Torque support.

The axle type (CC, TS or A12) can only be changed by Rohloff, as part of a paid factory overhaul, not in a workshop. Exactly which version your frame needs is what a check tells you: The check before a conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Can a SPEEDHUB go into a four-bar (Horst Link) frame?
Yes, but not with the long torque arm: the pivot sits just in front of the dropout, and the arm would block the suspension. In a four-bar frame the SPEEDHUB goes in with an OEM, OEM2 or PM axle plate.
