Removing and fitting an A12 wheel

An A12 wheel has no quick release and no axle nuts: two M7 bolts hold it, through bushings and spacers made to suit your frame. Taking it out and putting it back is simple, but one rule always applies: every bushing and spacer goes back exactly where it came from.

  1. Disconnect the shift actuation from the hub — with external actuation, shift to gear 14 and take off the cable box; with an E-14, switch the e-bike system off and unplug the connector.
  2. Loosen the left and right fixing bolts. The Nord-Lock washers open with a clearly audible click.
  3. Unscrew the bolts and take the wheel out.
  4. Keep the loose parts from the dropouts separately per side, in the right order, until refitting — the L and R marking on the bags helps.
  1. Guide the wheel into the thru-axle dropouts. Make sure the torque support engages the frame (or adapter) correctly and the brake disc goes into the caliper. With sliding dropouts or an eccentric bottom bracket, do not release the chain or belt tension.

  2. Put the bushings and spacers back as they came out. If the original part has an O-ring, do not fit it.

  3. Check the Nord-Lock washers: the teeth of the two halves face inwards, towards each other.

  4. Put the Nord-Lock washer on the fixing bolt, push it through the bushing and screw it at least two turns into the axle by hand — on both sides. If the chain or belt tension makes that impossible, release the tension now.

  5. Tighten both bolts alternately and gradually (5 mm Allen, 15–20 Nm).

  6. If you released it, tension the chain or belt as its maker specifies, and check that the wheel turns freely.

Frequently asked questions

What torque do the A12 bolts take?
15–20 Nm with a 5 mm Allen key, tightening the two sides alternately and gradually. Screw both in by hand at least two turns first. The Nord-Lock washers' teeth face inwards, and they are replaced after four openings.
