Replacing the chain tensioner spring

Since late 2002 the Rohloff chain tensioner has a modified coil spring. The conversion kit (Art. no. 8248) lets older tensioners take the new spring too.

  1. Lever the circlip off the axle with a narrow flat screwdriver — do not reuse it. Pull the disc and the cage off the axle, and remove the old spring.

  2. Clean and grease the axle. Fit the new spring and turn it until its short leg bears against the spring stop. Turn the long leg over the stop, holding the spring on the axle meanwhile.

  3. Push the cage fully onto the axle, turning it slightly back and forth. Fit the disc and snap the new circlip into the axle groove.

  4. Replace the old pulley screw with the supplied countersunk screw (M4×20, TX20, 3 Nm) and conical washer.

  5. Lift the long leg over the conical washer and let it spring back: it hooks under the edge of the counter-bearing and tensions the cage.
