Rohloff Caliber 2 (Art. no. 3000) measuring chain wear

A chain stretches, and a stretched chain wears the sprocket and chainring too. The Rohloff Caliber 2 shows on any 1/2” × 3/32” chain when it is due: put its recess on a roller and swing the gauge tip towards the chain. On a new chain the tip only just fits between the rollers — the more worn the chain, the deeper it drops in.

If it drops fully in on side … wear per link replace the chain if …
A 0.075 mm you have an aluminium chainring
S 0.1 mm it runs only on steel — like the SPEEDHUB’s sprocket

Changed in time, the chain lets sprocket and chainring last far longer. On turning the sprocket round: Sprocket: turning, replacing, splined.

For workshops, the Rohloff service box (Art. no. 8700) keeps the SPEEDHUB parts and tools needed most often in one place. Its contents since October 2018:

Frequently asked questions

When does the chain on a SPEEDHUB bike need replacing?
When the S side of the Rohloff Caliber 2 drops fully between the chain's rollers — 0.1 mm of wear per link, for steel sprockets and chainrings. With an aluminium chainring, the A side (0.075 mm) is already the signal. Changed in time, sprocket and chainring last much longer.
What torque do the SPEEDHUB's bolts take?
Most M4 screws — axle plate, shell cover, cable box — take 3 Nm with a TX20 Torx. The oil drain screw takes 0.5 Nm, the brake disc bolts 10 Nm, the TS axle nuts 35 Nm and the A12 bolt 15–20 Nm. The full table is in this article.
