Parts and accessories

The SPEEDHUB itself barely wears, but the drivetrain does — and damage, too, is soon put right with the right part. You can order parts from us: Parts and the webshop.

Gear indexing happens in the hub, not in the shifter — so there is nothing to adjust in the shifter, and nothing to drift out of adjustment. It fits on the right or left, with either direction of rotation, and is available complete or as parts (shifter: 8206, grip rubber: 8190). See The twist shifter.

Every SPEEDHUB today comes with the Splined Carrier system, and any older one can be converted. The 13–19 and 21-tooth sprockets are all reversible. For everyday riding a chainring-to-sprocket ratio of 2.5–2.8 has proved itself; a solo rider in hills and off-road can go as low as 1.9.

With 13, 14 and 15-tooth sprockets the chain may be no more than 8.5 mm high. For fitting, see Sprocket: turning, replacing, splined and Gates belt drive.

With its symmetrical flanges a SPEEDHUB wheel is very stiff — and that needs spokes with a 2.9 mm bend length. Rohloff DD SPEEDHUB spokes (2.0/1.8/2.0 mm) are exactly that, almost burr-free, and come in sets of 37 with 14 mm locking nipples, in black or silver. Spoke length follows from the rim’s ERD; lace two-cross on 26” and larger wheels, one-cross on 24” and smaller. See Wheel building and spokes.

Flange rings make the spoke flange stronger still and prevent flange breakage. Since October 2017 they come factory-fitted on every new SPEEDHUB; we always recommend them when relacing an older hub. Which you need is shown by the “Made in Germany” lettering:

Lettering on the hub Flange rings
not underlined 8523 — two identical rings
underlined 8524 — two rings of different sizes
Version For
8250 any usual frame, 54 mm chainline
8250-10 fatbikes, 148/190/197 mm frames, direct-mount hangers, other hub gears or single-speed
8245 DH (short) downhill

The Rohloff chain tensioner takes up 10 links, mounts on the derailleur hanger, lines up with the chainline using spacers, and swings back for quick wheel changes. With dropouts thinner than 7 mm, a 13-tooth threaded sprocket or any splined sprocket (58 mm chainline), the 3.5 mm longer fixing bolt is needed. It only suits 1/2” × 3/32” and 1/2” × 11/128” chains. See Chain, tensioner, chain guard.

The SPEEDHUB’s torque is taken to the frame by an axle plate and — on disc-brake frames — a torque adapter:

Adapter For which frame
SPEEDBONE (8550) IS2000 brake mount with IS caliper
Monkey Bone (8553 / 8554) IS2000 brake mount with post-mount caliper, 160 / 180 mm disc
PM Bone (8555) direct post-mount brake mount
Fat Bone (8556 / 8557) XXL hub on a post-mount frame; for IS2000 mounts, the Monkey Bone-10

There are four axle plate types: PM and OEM2 for disc-mount frames, OEM for frames with Rohloff OEM dropouts (rim or disc brake), and the standard plate with the long torque arm — CC and TS versions for older rim-brake frames. See Torque support.

  • Oil: an oil change every year or 5,000 km, easiest with the oil-change kit — see Care products and oils.
  • Brake discs: Rohloff discs made for the SPEEDHUB’s four-bolt mount, for almost any disc brake — see Brake disc: fitting and replacing.
  • Cable-Manager-Kit (5201): tidy cable routing even on frames with no mounting points. When changing a housing, it simply comes out and goes back in.

Frequently asked questions

Which flange rings fit my SPEEDHUB?
The "Made in Germany" lettering on the hub decides: not underlined, the 8523 set (two identical rings); underlined, the 8524 set (two rings of different sizes). Since October 2017 they come factory-fitted on every new SPEEDHUB.
