Model designations

A SPEEDHUB’s model name tells you its axle, shift actuation and axle plate — for example SPEEDHUB 500/14 CC DB OEM2 black. Which versions exist is shown in Variants.

Code Meaning What it is for
CC hollow quick-release axle vertical dropouts only; quick, tool-free wheel removal
TS threaded axle with M10×1 nuts required for horizontal dropouts, fine for vertical ones too; on downhill bikes the solid bolted joint also stiffens the rear triangle
A12 axle with M7 bolts and adapter sleeves for 12 mm thru-axle frames; the sleeves match the frame’s axle system, so it has to be measured first with the 8600 check kit
Code Meaning
EX external actuation: the cables run straight to the cable box on the shift housing, no separate cable stop needed — ideal for short (say 20”) or unusual rear triangles
DB disc brake cover, always with external actuation
OEM axle plate for Rohloff OEM dropouts: the support block sits in the left dropout’s extended slot and replaces the long torque arm
OEM2 axle plate for IS disc-mount frames: the brake mount’s tabs also act as the torque support — a clean, tidy solution
PM axle plate for direct post-mount frames, with the PM Bone adapter
T tandem: with 2.5 m cables and housings, for tandems and recumbents
XL for 170 and 177 mm frames (fatbikes) — DB only, black, 32 holes
XXL for 190 and 197 mm frames (fatbikes) — DB only, black, 32 holes

With no EX or DB in the name, the hub has internal actuation: it needs a cable stop on the frame at least 240 mm from the rear axle, and cannot be combined with a disc brake — see Cables with internal actuation.

OEM versions on a rigid frame need sliding Rohloff OEM dropouts or an eccentric bottom bracket, otherwise a chain tensioner. For how the torque is taken, see Torque support.

Every type comes in three colours: silver anodised (polished aluminium until October 2013), red anodised (red powder coat until spring 2008) and black anodised. 32 holes is standard; for the 36-hole version a “6” is put in front of the article number. Flange rings now come factory-fitted on every type.

A disc brake needs an IS (1999) or direct post-mount brake mount on the frame. The DB versions have two special features:

  1. The cover has a flange for the disc. Because of the large shell bearings and the shaft seal, a standard six-bolt disc does not fit, so the SPEEDHUB uses its own four-bolt Rohloff disc, with four M8×0.75 bolts on a 65 mm bolt circle — see Brake disc: fitting and replacing.
  2. Every DB version has external actuation, so the cables never touch the disc in any fitting position.

Any SPEEDHUB can be converted to a DB version later, but only the Rohloff factory service does it — we handle it for you.

Article numbers and scope of delivery for the 135 mm CC and TS models. Every box contains the hub, the twist shifter and the cables; the flange rings are factory-fitted.

The hub needs the accessories that suit the frame. Go through:

  • a chain tensioner if the chain cannot be tensioned otherwise, plus a chain guide;
  • SPEEDBONE, Monkey Bone or PM Bone for a disc-brake frame;
  • spokes of the right length and the Rohloff disc that suits your brake;
  • a straight cable stop for internal actuation;
  • a long chain tensioner bolt for a 13-tooth sprocket;
  • the TS long axle plate if a trailer hitch, Pitlock or kickstand mounts directly on the axle.

We go through this list during the check.

  • Tandems: every SPEEDHUB suits a tandem, and since 2021 every dropout width is officially approved. The tandem version comes with 2.5 m cables; we recommend 2.0/1.8/2.0 mm DD spokes with a 2.9 mm bend length. On wheel stiffness: Wheel stability.
  • Small wheels: not below 18” — the high flange would make the spokes meet the rim at too steep an angle. Wheels under 26” are laced one-cross only, never radially.
  • Half steps: with two chainrings about 7% apart (39 and 42 teeth, say) the 13.6% steps can be halved — interesting for road racing.
  • Wider range: two chainrings add one gear (about 13% tooth difference) or two (about 29%); with 50/39 rings the range is 675%.
  • Frame-mounted gearbox: with the SPEEDHUB in the frame as an intermediate gearbox, the same minimum chain ratios apply from crank to gearbox; the chain after it is unrestricted.
  • Carbon handlebars: the old 8200 twist shifter is not approved on carbon bars; the 8206 and 8207 are.
  • Quick release: use only a steel-axle quick release on a CC axle; light alloy or titanium-axle quick releases are at your own risk.

Frequently asked questions

What does "CC DB OEM2" mean in a SPEEDHUB's name?
CC: hollow quick-release axle. DB: disc brake cover, always with external actuation. OEM2: an axle plate that takes its support from the frame's IS disc mount, so no long torque arm is needed.
What do a leading 6 or a T mean in a SPEEDHUB article number?
A 6 in front of the article number marks the 36-hole version, a T the tandem version, which comes with 2.5 m cables — 68025 T, for example, is a 36-hole silver CC DB OEM tandem hub.
