Modular system

Every version of the SPEEDHUB 500/14 is built on the same 14-speed gear unit. Around it, four building blocks are chosen to suit the bike: the axle type, the shift actuation, the torque support and the brake mount. That is how the SPEEDHUB fits almost any frame — it takes a different combination, not a different gearbox.

From left to right: SPEEDHUB with CC, TS and A12 axle

  • CC — hollow axle with a quick release, for classic dropouts.
  • TS — axle threaded on both sides, held in the frame by M10×1 nuts.
  • A12 — for 12 mm thru-axle frames. The special Rohloff A12 axle takes adapter bushings on both sides to match the various thru-axle systems, and is fixed in the dropout with M7 bolts and Nord-Lock washers. Details: Variants.

From left to right: external and internal shift actuation

External actuation. The shift cables run uninterrupted from the shifter to the cable box, so no separate cable stop is needed. To remove the wheel, the cable box simply pulls off the shift housing. Since late 2024 every SPEEDHUB has external actuation.

Internal actuation — now available only as a spare part. The cables run from the shifter to a cable stop, where two bayonet connectors join them to the cable built into the hub. It cannot be combined with a disc brake, as the bayonets would foul the disc.

In both cases the axle plate’s hole pattern adjusts in 30° steps, giving the ideal cable routing on almost any frame. For electronic shifting, see Rohloff E-14.

From left to right: long torque arm, OEM and OEM2 axle plates, PM axle plate

Every hub gear’s axle wants to turn as you ride: backwards in the reduction gears (1–10), forwards in the overdrive gears (12–14). That reaction torque has to be taken up by the frame. A three-speed hub makes do with a flatted axle in the dropouts, but the SPEEDHUB’s wide gear range calls for far sturdier support.

Version When
Standard — long torque arm clamped to the chainstay, fits almost any frame
OEM — axle plate when the left dropout slot is 37 mm long, facing down
OEM2 — axle plate on the IS brake mount, with a MonkeyBone, or with an M5 adapter to the rack eyelet
CC PM / A12 PM — axle plate with a PM Bone, when the frame has a Post Mount brake mount (160/180 mm)

Since late 2024 the four-hole shell cover with a disc brake mount has been standard. It can be used on rim-brake bikes too.

Frequently asked questions

What are the SPEEDHUB's three axle types?
CC is the quick-release axle, TS the threaded axle held in the frame by M10×1 nuts, and A12 the version for 12 mm thru-axle frames. The 14-speed gear unit is the same in all three — the combination of parts is what fits the hub to the bike.
