Preparing for a long tour
Its robustness and long life make the SPEEDHUB 500/14 a particularly good choice for long tours and bike travel. The rest of the bike, though, can still be damaged on the way by a fall, heavy dirt or wear — so it pays to prepare, especially for regions where parts and tools are hard to come by.

Tools to take
Section titled “Tools to take”- 2 mm Allen key — bayonet connectors, cable pulley screws
- 2.5 mm Allen key — fixing the twist shifter, only on the old shifter (Art. no. 8200)
- 3 mm Allen key — oil drain screw
- 5 mm Allen key — chain tensioner and torque support bolts
- 8 mm ring or open spanner — to turn the shift shaft
- 15 mm open spanner — for the bolted (TS) axle
- TX20 Torx — for every other screw on the SPEEDHUB
- chain oil and grease
For long tours, add
Section titled “For long tours, add”- oil-change kit (Art. no. 8410)
- sprocket remover (Art. no. 8508)
- a spare chain and sprocket
- spare spokes
- spare shift cables; with internal actuation a spare cable (Art. no. 8271), and with the quick-change axle ring (from serial number 25,300) the Easy-Set (Art. no. 8573) or the complete axle ring (Art. no. 8572)
Emergency repairs on the road
Section titled “Emergency repairs on the road”When the nearest workshop is far away, some faults can be bridged for a while:
- Broken shift cable at the hub (internal actuation): remove the axle plate and the cable pulley, and use the 8 mm spanner to select a suitable gear, gear 7 for example. You can ride on in that fixed gear.
- Broken shift cable (internal actuation): pull on the SPEEDHUB’s cables to select a suitable gear.
- Lost or broken bayonet (internal actuation): replace it with a terminal block, or tie the cable and the wire together with binding wire.
- Broken shift cable (external actuation): pull off the cable box and use the 8 mm spanner to select a suitable gear.
- Lost circlip on the torque support quick release: replace it with an M6 bolt and nut, or with binding wire for the time being.
- Oil loss: slight “sweating” or a small leak at the seals is not dangerous; you can ride on until the next regular oil change. Details: Fault diagnosis.
With a trailer
Section titled “With a trailer”A trailer can be used with a SPEEDHUB, with a CC or a TS axle; on some models the torque support needs adapting. For an A12 axle the hitch mounting needs the bushing dimensions — send us the hub’s serial number and the bike’s make, model and model year, and we will tell you the exact specification.

You can reach us on the road too: write to us through the contact form and we will do our best to help.
